100 milliseconds is enough to get the first impression of someone. In this short time, we decide whether we find someone personable, attractive, trustworthy, or competent. Changing this impression later is not entirely impossible, but it is not an easy task either. As you know, there is no second chance for a first impression. Proper self-presentation therefore already plays a crucial role here. The better you get this first impression, the faster and longer you can benefit from it (instead of using the energy to put yourself back in the right light).
Social psychology explains that self-presentation is a way in which each of us presents ourselves: our statements, behaviors, what we communicate non-verbally, and above all how I want to be seen in others’ eyes. We like to be perceived as we come up with ourselves, and self-presentation usually involves the exact selection of information about ourselves. This is one of the most interesting soft skills.
Think about how do you want to be perceived by the recipient?
- As a nice and trustworthy person?
- As a knowledgeable person, competent, expert in some field?
- As a person with power – can it be political or social?
- As a person with high social status?
- Just me, a curious and memorable person?
Whatever you choose, you create your image. Precisely through self-presentation, but also through the effect of the first impression, and above all through further action and relationships. Only the recipient will not always have the opportunity to meet you after further actions.
Make a plan!
Remember: self-presentation is the selection of certain information to convey. You choose a specific incarnation, talk about what you want and need. Prepare beforehand your speech and the information you want to share, don’t let surprise yourself. In this way, you can present your beneficial character traits, and remain true and authentic.
During your self-presentation remember about:
Be yourself, be real. Do not lie, do not color artificially.
- Nonverbal communication
Gestures, facial expressions, cancer, hand movement, body posture. This is your secret weapon because it is mainly based on presentation. Remember that words and gestures must be consistent. If you deny yourself, the image will be unclear.
When we get nervous we start talking faster and incoherently. We create the image of an unorganized and chaotic person. So speak in a confident but calm voice. Of course with the right volume, because when you start talking quietly, you step out to be a timid person who has nothing interesting to say.
Be prepared, know what you want to say, and what personality traits you want to present.
- Facial expression and eye contact. Smile!
When we speak and listen we look at the face and in direct contact with the eyes. The face will tell us the most about the state of emotion and the speaker’s mind. So when you speak, look towards the recipient.
- Posture and external appearance
Look adequate to the situation. Everyone has their own beauty and it is worth emphasizing. And above all, through external appearance, you express yourself and respect for the environment.
- They don’t know how much you are afraid
Of course, you can betray your fear with your behavior, but you can also awaken the inner layers of a brave part of your personality. Remember, stress itself is not paralyzing, good stress – it will mobilize you.
Good self-presentation will prove to be successful when you train a little and prepare for it. Why do you need it? Because in this way you can achieve internal victory as well as success in the chosen field.
